Funnybooks and Firewater

With beautiful art by Alex Ross, a script by Mark Waid this DC Elseworlds mini-series made a splash in 1996.  This week we are discussing Kingdom Come.  A futuristic story that deals with the conflict between the out of touch heroes we know, and a new group of dangerous vigilantes.

This week we stretch our feminist muscle with Bitch Planet.  We read the first collection of this current series by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine De Landro.  It is both a feminist parody of exploitation films, specifically women in prison movies, and a great commentary on society.  Next week we are reading the event comic Kingdom Come from DC.

A cross of Star Wars and Game of Thrones, this week we discuss Saga, from Brian K. Vaughn, and Fiona Staples.  A space opera that tackles everything from war, to parenthood. Next week we are reading Bitch Planet.

This week we discuss the first trade of Locke and Key - Welcome to Lovecraft.  Sit down, create your own ghostly brew, and join us as we discuss Joe Hill, and Gabriel Rodriguez’s creepy story. Next week we will be discussing the first book of Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples Saga series.  

Comrades! Its Episode 8, which according to Adam, makes us a real podcast now! In this episode we discus the 2003 prestige comic from DC Red Son.  Like most episodes there are quite a few tangents and rants. We discuss how Q stole his dads Russian vodka and snuck it into my sisters wedding. We argue over Russian Batman’s fashion choices, and why divorce in comic books is not allowed if it is inconvenient to the story.

This week we bring you a tasty treat. We are reading, and discussing the first TPB of Chew, Tasters Choice from John Layman and Rob Guillory. A lovely tale of food based talents, chicken prohibition, and cannibalism - and you thought you had a rough day job.  Next week we are discussing he prestige comic Red Son.  Join us for the fun comrade!   

A new X-Men film is just about here, and we have returned to an X-men Classic.  This week we are drinking to, and reading The Dark Phoenix Saga.  Who knew a comic book that is older than most of us could be so sexy?  Next week, we are reading and discussing “Chew: Tasters Choice” the first trade paperback of Chew from 2009.  Read, and drink along with us.  

 

With a new tv show starting at the end of the week, we took a look back at the 1995 comic that inspired it.  This week we read “Preacher - Gone to Texas” created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillion.  We are joined by Andy from the Bored as Hell podcast who was able to see the first episode of Preacher at SXSW.  Next week we prepare for the “X-men Apocalypse” film by reading the X-men hallmark “The Dark Phoenix Saga” from 1980.  Read, and drink along with us.
